For our December trip, we will be working toward completion of the Aviation and Safety Merit Badges.  The Troop will travel to Morristown, NJ to visit the Viacom Pictures hanger and the aircraft that reside there.  On Friday night, Scouts will have the opportunity to tour the facilities at the airfield, including the firefighting and snow removal equipment.  In addition, they will visit the control tower for the field.  On Saturday, we will continue work on the Aviation Merit Badge, work on the Safety Merit Badge, and if time is available, perform annual maintenance on troop equipment.  We will wrap up between 3 and 5 PM.  Links to a full description of the trip, directions, payment page and Safety Merit Badge Workbook  are posted below.

We will travel to the “Battleship Cove” at 5 Water Street in Fall River, Massachusetts, which is home to five National Historic Landmark vessels including the Battleship “USS Massachusetts”, the Destroyer “USS Joseph P. Kennedy”, the submarine “USS Lionfish”, PT Boats “617” and “796”, and the Russian ship “Hiddensee”.  Everyone will get to sleep in the same authentic bunks that the sailors slept in; learn how the sailors lived and worked on board; participate in special activities (knot-tying, Storytelling, Morse Code); gather round to watch an action-packed feature film; “mingle” with veterans who made history; and have a full dinner and breakfast in the battleship’s Wardroom.   You can get more information at www.battleshipcove.org.  We plan on gathering early Saturday morning (November 14th) at OLPH, driving up, staying overnight and returning on Sunday (November 15th).  There are other museums to visit and people can leave as early or late as they want on Sunday (we just have to have our gear off of the battleship by 10:30 am on Sunday morning).  The cost is $65.00 per person.  With the troop subsidy, it will end up being $30 per scout (and $65 per adult).  We are also going try and work in a visit to the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut on the way up or on the way back.  This is the home of the historic ship “Nautilus”, the world’s first nuclear Submarine.  The cost of this would be separate and in addition to the cost of Battleship Cove.  We have 35 seats reserved.  After that it is only available if there are more spots available on the ship.  If you want to go…sign up quickly!  Payment has to be sent out by October 30th.  If there are any questions, please email me cjmellone@gmail.com or call me at 201-755-2627.

BELOW ARE THE FORMS REQUIRED TO SIGN UP FOR THE TRIP:

Okemo Ski Activity Consent

Okemo Ski Trip Payment Form

Back by popular demand, Troop 49 will be running an awesome ski trip to OKEMO Mountain Resort in the ski capital of the Northeast, Vermont!! (less than 4 hours from Oakland).

PLEASE READ ALL INFORMATION CAREFULLY!

Due to operational changes at the Hostel we stayed at last year, we will be renting a house in Ludlow VT this year. However, the rental requirements in the area required us to rent the house for 3 nights (Thurs, Friday and Saturday nights). We understand that these are school days but it will provide the flexibility for those who expressed an interest in the past to ski Friday, as well (technically 4 days of skiing are possible for you die hards).

Here is the link to the house rental http://www.vrbo.com/323538. As you’ll see in the rental photos, there is definitely plenty to do at the house after a full day of skiing and snowboarding. Life doesn’t get any better! For those interested in doing Snow Shoeing instead of skiing, the troop will have shoes available. Just let us know before the trip.

Due to the sleep accommodation limitations at the house, a maximum of 25 people can stay at the house. Initially, we will be accepting sign-ups for sleeping at the house for Scouts only (23 Maximum). If there is still room after the initial sign-up period (which ends November 14th), family members will be accepted off a wait list. BUT DON’T WORRY! There is no limitation on the number of people who can attend this trip and we can all eat and hangout at the house. If there are insufficient sleeping arrangements at the House, there are sleeping accommodations available at the Homestyle Hostel we stayed at last year, as well as a Best Western. If you are interesting in booking a room at the Hostel or Best Western, contact Mr. Dugas

Specifics and Pricing:

  • What’s Included: Lift tickets for Saturday and Sunday, House accommodations for Thursday (if desired), Friday and Saturday nights, Saturday Breakfast and Dinner, Sunday Breakfast, snacks.
  • How Much: $142 for Scouts (as a result of a $100 troop subsidy), $242 for non-scouts ages 13-18, $260 for adults (an awesome deal!)
  • For non-scouts and adults who are unable or don’t wish to stay at the House, you can deduct $128 from the above prices and apply it towards other accommodations.
  • If you wish to ski for 3 days (i.e Friday, Saturday, Sunday), add $28 (ages 13-18) and $33 for adults to the above prices
  • If needed, group equipment rentals are available (contact Guy Dugas for information) If you will be skiing for the season, you may won’t to rent equipment for the season at home.
  • We will provide a snack to take to the mountain but, you are welcome to purchase Lunch on your own at the mountain.
  • Transportation will be via carpool
  • For those scouts who need to do cooking for advancement, merit badge work or because you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mr. Dugas.

Payment Information:

  • Payment for the trip is due in-full at time of registration using the Payment/Registration Form. Payments are due no later than November 14th.

  • FOR SCOUTS ONLY: If you currently don’t have sufficient funds in your scout account and will definitely raise the needed funds for the trip through either wreaths sales or ShopRite Gift card sales, we will only require a $50 non-refundable deposit by November 14th. The remaining balance MUST be raised through the above fundraising no later than December 19th. NO EXCEPTIONS!

  • Please return your Payment/Registration Form and Activity Consent Form (for each participant) to Mr. Dugas (not Mr. Foley). You will not be considered registered for the trip until these items are delivered to Mr. Dugas at 63 Chicasaw Dr Oakland (leave in Scout Box next to front door, NOT US Mail box). You may mail it if you wish.

Please note we are limited to 23 people in the House so please sign-up early to guarantee you spot. Also, if the scout is a new skier/snowboarder and is unable to negotiate the trails and lifts on his own, a parent or guardian must attend and the trip and monitor the scout.

Important: All attendees must have an updated BSA medical form (Parts A&B) on file with Mrs. Burns. That means it must be dated within 1 year of 1/31/16.

If anyone is interested in completing the Snowsports merit badge, please contact Mr. Dugas.

You can contact Mr. Dugas if you have any questions or concerns via email or phone at fetriman1@aol.com , 201-788-1497.

Camp Sampler Program Information – Discount prices if you are attending more than one week combinations for certain camps and weeks.

Camp Fees:

Important Note:  Do not make payments directly to the Northern New Jersey Council; All Payments will be handled through Troop 49 to reduce additional accounting work on both sides.

Through our fundraising efforts, Troop 49 is able to give each scout a $50 credit for use for one NNJC Summer Camp weeks at either Floodwood or Turrell.

Full price Less $50 troop subsidy
Paying by 4/8 $395 $345
Paying after 4/8 $445 $395

Bottom line – If you’re not going to Floodwood, and you pay by April 10, the cost is $325.

Adult Fee Information:

There is a cost of $125 per adult to attend the full week of Turrell. That breaks down to a $25 per day per diem rate for adults, so if you are an adult and plan to stay overnight and eat meals, the cost will be $25 per day that you plan to stay. The first two leaders required to meet national, state and local standards attend free. That number of adults who stay for free increases incrementally depending upon how many scouts attend.

Camp Information:

Information relating to Turrell Summer camp, including the 2015 Summer Camp Leader’s Guide, Medical forms and Merit Badge classes being offered are now posted on the Northern New Jersey Council Website at:   http://www.nnjbsa.org/summer-camp/2631

Merit Badge Class registration is not yet open – when the form to register for merit badges goes on line, each scout attending camp must go through and sign up for classes during each session of the day.  Please make sure that when you go through this process, you select the correct camp week that we will be there:
