Nantucket Island Massachusetts
BSA Camp Richard
Thursday, June 30 to Monday, July 4

Families, this is a tremendous opportunity to see a beautiful island and experience a scout trip. There will never be a nicer, cleaner, more comfortable camp. The ground is sandy, the beaches close, and the company will be exceptional. The shower houses are very nice; the water is hot, and we eat like royalty.

Guideline summary
 This is a family trip. All scouts and immediate family members are welcome and encouraged
 All siblings must be accompanied by a parent
 All on-island transportation is via bicycle.
 Bicycles are available to rent just off the ferry dock
 Everyone is expected to help with meals; either preparing, cooking or cleaning up
 Gear space is limited. Plan on one duffel bag per person.
 We will likely perform a small service project sometime during our visit to Camp Richard

Trip Cost
Final cost will depend on the number of people going and activities. In 2012, we did the whole trip for ~$120 per person including museums, and it was another $20 or so (optional) for the seafood feast which was really extraordinary (thank you Mr. Dugas!). As a point of comparison, hotel rooms on the island run $300 per night and up.

Transport
Transport to and from Hyannis, MA is on your own. We do not plan to gather at OLPH prior to departing. Route 95 through Connecticut is very unpredictable, so be sure to allow plenty of time. Some scouts will attend without parents. Parents, this may be your opportunity to repay or pay forward the kindness provided by other parents who have transported your scout to / from other events.

We are REQUIRED to board and travel on the ferry as a group to get the group rate. If you miss the ferry departure, you will have to pay a second time at your own expense to get yourselves and your bikes on the ferry.

Two vehicles will be transporting gear to Hyannis. The first will haul the troop trailer. We will strip it of all non-essential gear. It is all we will have to move goods on the island. Pack with the intent to conserve space. Remember, once we arrive on the island, you are riding a bicycle and it’s a 2.5 mile ride from Ferry to camp, so just “taking it with you” won’t work. The second vehicle will haul the bicycle trailer, and it will not go on the ferry. We will have space for approximately 35 bikes. If you have racks and are driving, we ask that you transport your own bicycles if possible. This is especially true if you have a high-end bicycle.

Once we arrive, we will unload all of the bicycles and park the tow vehicle and trailer somewhere. Everyone will roll their own bike on to the ferry, and unload it from the ferry on to the island. It will be a great and exciting beginning of our adventure.

Meals
Meals will be prepared and served family style in our campsite. We will have a full breakfast every morning. While one group is cleaning up, another will be helping to make bag lunches. Once complete, we’ll depart camp for the day’s fun and adventure. Usually, a group forms in the afternoon for a trip to the beach. We will reconvene at dinner time for a communal meal. Meal planning will take place soon after registration closes – and your participation is strongly encouraged. Every family is expected to take responsibility for a meal. Food on the island is MUCH more expensive than on the mainland. We will agree upon a menu before we depart, and bring as much food along as reasonably possible.

Below is approximately what we did for meals in 2012, repurposed for reference:
