This trip is a rare and unique opportunity to see a very special part of New England and visit a military strategy school unique in the entire country.  Newport, Rhode Island, here we come!!

What/Where:  A camping trip to visit Aquapaug Scout Reservation, thirty minutes outside of Newport, Rhode Island

When: Saturday, April 8 through Monday, April 10 (beginning of Spring Break)

Why: To visit historical sites in Newport and the Naval War College (personal tour designed for Troop 49 Scouts!)

Fee: $65.00 for scouts, $55.00 for adults

Registration closes: March 17, 2017   Headcount goes to the War College in advance of our visit.

Miscellaneous Information: A pre-screening security check is required for anyone 18 years of age or older in order to gain access to the Naval War College military site.  To participate in the tour, names must be submitted three weeks prior to the trip. For adults, first, middle, and last names, social security number and date of birth are all required.  We will gather those separately.   Photo ID is required, as well, for adults.  No one will be admitted on to the Military Base without photo ID (Driver’s license or passport acceptable).

 

Tentative Schedule

 

Saturday, April 8

Arrive OLPH at 6:15am.  Cars will depart at 6:30 am, sharp.

Arrive at Aquapaug Scout Reservation, our home for the weekend, at approximately 10:00am.

Set up camp, eat lunch, canoeing on the largest lake in Rhode Island.  Cover advancement for scouts needing it.  Dinner.  Campfire, with a special guest preparing us for our Monday visit to the Naval War College.

 

Sunday, April 9

Breakfast at camp

Morning tour of The Breakers, the largest “summer cottage” in Newport, vacation home of the Vanderbilt family.

Lunch at the Brick Alley Restaurant, a famous restaurant in Newport.  Scouts have a prix-fixe menu which is included in camping weekend fee.  Adults order off the menu and pay on their own.

After lunch, an ice cream run on Thames Street.

Historical tour: (tentative) of Newport with a professional guide

Cliff Walk by the mansions:  “In 1975 the walk was designated as a National Recreation Trail … the 65th in the nation and first in New England. The walk runs 3.5 miles and about two-thirds of the walk is in easy walking condition.”

Dinner back at Camp.

Campfire with a visitor from the Naval War College who will prepare us well for our Monday visit.

 

Monday, April 10

Breakfast, break camp early

Arrive at the Naval War College promptly at 8:30am

Personal tour of the facilities

Meet and Greet with Rear Admiral Jeff Harley, 56th President of the U.S. Naval War College.

Attend a Naval War College class and participate.  Class syllabus will be provided in advance.

Personal tour of the Naval War College Museum.

Depart the Naval War College at approximately 12:30pm.  Head for home.

 

What to pack:

Money for ice cream in Newport, and for potential meals the trip to and from New Jersey.

Class B uniform (Polo shirt with Troop Logo) for Mansion Tour and day in Newport (jeans o.k.).

Full Class A uniform for Monday at the Naval War College.  This is non-negotiable as the Military Officers will be in full uniform, as well, and we are attending class with them. This includes official Boy Scout pants, etc. Adults should be in dressy casual wear if they are planning on going on to the Naval War College property (jeans are not appropriate).

Gear:

  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Headlamp – fresh batteries
  • Water bottles or bladder
  • Mess kit
  • Duffel or backpack
  • Rain Gear – we will canoe in the rain if necessary
  • Swim gear, water shoes
  • Fleece /coat– likely to be cool in the evenings
  • Nylon shorts/pants – NO COTTON
  • ** HAT **
  • Sun Screen
  • Sun Glasses
  • Rain Gear
