Floodwood Mountain Reservation – 2012
August 5-12, 2012
Introduction
Floodwood Mountain Scout Reservation offers a challenging outdoor adventure program that primarily consists of backcountry canoeing with opportunities for water skiing, rock climbing, and FUN!!! The program is designed to develop confidence and encourage self-reliance in the spirit of cooperation with others. One unique feature of Floodwood is its location on Rollins Pond, which, in turn, connects directly into the vast Saranac, St. Regis, Tupper, Raquette, and Fulton Chain of canoe waters. As a result, out-of-camp canoe trips flow directly from the camp’s waterfront. No other camp in the Adirondacks has this advantage.
Please take a few moments to read and review the information below and reach out to Mr. Rob Dente rdente@yahoo.com with any questions.

At 7:30PM on January 26, 2012, we will have a Floodwood camper meeting at OLPH. At this meeting we will set up the treks, identify itineraries, and allow the leaders to move forward with making reservations for each trek.
If you are interested in more information, keep reading, and there will be another link to the signup form at the end of this information page.
Scout Eligibility & Trek Size
Effective 2010, participants must be 13 years old by Sept 1 of the year of participation. So, if a boy is 12 now and would like to go to Floodwood this summer they can as long as they will turn 13 before Sept 1st.
All treks must have two-deep leadership. Floodwood Voyageurs may fulfill the role of a second leader and we also have male and female Voyageurs. The minimum number for a trek is 6.
The upper limit to trek size is governed by the NY Department of Environmental Conservation. For canoeing treks, the trek size cannot exceed 12 people, including the camp provided Voyageur. Canoeing in St. Regis Canoe Area is limited to trek size of 8.
Dates
For 2011, Troop 49 is coordinating treks during Week 4 of Floodwood’s Camp season: Departing Oakland early on Sunday, August 5th and arriving home late afternoon on Saturday, August 11th. Treks should plan to arrive between 1:00 and 3:00 and not before noon on Sunday.
Provisional Participation - If an individual scout is unable to make Troop 49’s planned week at camp, there may be the possibility of attending camp on a provisional basis with another troop during a different camp week. Please let Mr. Dente know if this is something you would like to pursue.
Costs and Fees
Please review the following information about costs and fees carefully:
· DO NOT pay for camp directly to the Northern New Jersey Council Office. All payments will be collected by the troop, and one check will be sent for our treks. This allows us to best manage our roster, avoid overpayments to Council, and save time tracking the accounting aspect of the trip.
· The troop will be collecting a $50 Commitment Deposit, due January 26, 2012. Please try your best to commit by this time, so we can accurately organize treks and cost as well as make reservations where needed. We will do our best to accommodate scouts who sign up after the cutoff date, but we cannot guarantee space within a trek after they have been set at the January 26 meeting.
· Treks may assess Trek Fees in addition to the Camp Fee, in order to pay for reservations at Lower & Middle Saranac Lakes, supplies, travel meals, etc. These fees will be handled on a trek by trek basis.
· Camp Fees for Floodwood vary by the number of people (youth and adults) in the trek. Additionally, there is an Early Bird discount. The chart below outlines the Early Bird camp fee and cost per scout.

· The round trip journey from Oakland to Floodwood is over 500 miles. Please consider chipping in to cover the costs of fuel and tolls.
· Northern New Jersey Council offers camperships that help defray the cost of camping for families in need. The deadline for campership applications is March 15, 2012. The instructions and form for 2012 camperships is located at this link.
· Notes for Trek Leaders regarding cost:
o Each trek must guarantee a minimum of 6 participants.
o Maximizing the number of participants in each trek is cost effective.
o The deposit to hold a slot is $500 per trek. It is non-transferable and non-refundable. (For example, if we book two trek slots, but end up with only one trek, we will lose our second trek deposit since the deposit is not transferable.) Each deposit will count towards the total fees for that particular trek.
Medical Forms, Medications and Allergies
The required medical form is located at this link. All forms must be signed by both the parent and a physician. Anyone without a complete medical form cannot be in camp. All participants, youth and adult, are required to have a physical within the past year. The new BSA medical form must be filled out entirely and signed by the parent and physician.
Preparing for a Canoe Trek at Floodwood
Trek length and trek routes are completely customizable. Some sample treks are listed in the 2012 Floodwood Leaders Guide. Trek itineraries are due prior to arriving at camp. Two pre-camp leaders meeting are held where treks can meet with staff members to discuss their possible routes. Leaders must attend one of these meetings.
Each night out on the lakes, treks camp out, usually at a designated campsite. Most campsites are first come, first serve. Sites on Middle and Lower Saranac must be reserved by Permit. The State Park Service uses www.reserveamerica.com for Reservations. All campsites that you can book thru www.reserve america.com hold 6 people. A trek of 7-12 must be split over two campsites, and two separate reservations will be required.
Treks can either be dropped off at their starting point and return to camp or they may leave from camp and be picked up at their ending point. There is an additional charge to units that would like a pick-up and drop-off.
Fishing - New York State requires a fishing license for all persons fishing 16 years or older. For more information, visit the DEC webpage at http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6091.html
Trek Leader
Each trek should decide upon a youth Trek Leader prior to arriving at Floodwood. The Trek Leaders is responsible for important decisions before and while on trek. Following the patrol method, the Trek Leader assigns cooking and cleaning duties, assigns a navigator for each day, and ensures the entire trek is working together to complete its trek. The Trek Leader will work closely with both adult leaders and the Voyageur.
Voyageur
Each trek is assigned a Voyageur to act as guide, teacher, leader and friend to each member of the trek. They are not substitutes for a unit’s natural leadership, but serve as a resource for your trek. While trekking, they instruct and stress Leave No Trace camping, good wilderness ethics, and will teach specialized outdoor skills. Voyageurs are trained and certified in CPR, Wilderness First Aid and BSA Lifeguard, Climbing, and numerous other BSA required courses.
Canoes
The standard canoe is a Grumman aluminum canoe. The camp has available 8 lightweight, composite-material trek canoes. The usage fee is $10/day/canoe. The additional charge for these canoes is based on the shorter life span than aluminum canoes. Reservations are recommended, though not required. Lightweight canoes are more easily damaged than aluminum canoes. Treks renting the lightweight canoes are responsible for any damage incurred while on trek.
