Troop 49 Scouts and Families!

Are you itching to get out and start camping as Spring breaks through?

Do you want to keep piling on those camping/tent nights toward rank and Merit Badge requirements?

How about all that cooking that needs to be done in the great outdoors?

Well this trip is for you!

We will be traveling a very short distance to Camp Glen Gray in Mahwah and utiliz the Gillwell campsite (not the cabin). Most of you have been to this campground and it has a easy layout and offers us places to cook, play, hike and work on various scout skills. The site will have firm ground for your tent, platforms and Lean-tos.

Timing: Primany camping evening will be Saturday, March 30th, we will meet and set up camp for lunch and dinner, finishing with breakfast on Sunday morning and a brief hike for those interested. Being close allows all to be ready for the Eagle Court of Honor in the afternoon. If there is a lot of interest, we will open up Friday night, the 29th into Saturday. Adults and siblings (accompanied by a parent, are welcome).

Cooking opportunities:

We already have some scouts that need to prepare two meals for a small group. There might be opportunities for others to cook if we have a larger group participate.

Payment Page: Battleship Massachusetts Payment Form 2019 v1

We will travel to the “Battleship Cove” at 5 Water Street in Fall River, Massachusetts, which is home to five National Historic Landmark vessels including the Battleship “USS Massachusetts”, the Destroyer “USS Joseph P. Kennedy”, the submarine “USS Lionfish”, PT Boats “617” and “796”, and the Russian ship “Hiddensee”.  Everyone will get to sleep in the same authentic bunks that the sailors slept in; learn how the sailors lived and worked on board; participate in special activities (knot-tying, Storytelling, Morse Code); gather round to watch an action-packed feature film; “mingle” with veterans who made history; and have a full dinner and breakfast in the battleship’s Wardroom.   You can get more information at www.battleshipcove.org.

We plan on gathering early Saturday morning (March 16th) at OLPH, driving up, staying overnight and returning on Sunday (March 17th).  There are other museums to visit and people can leave as early or late as they want on Sunday (we just have to have our gear off of the battleship by 10:30 am on Sunday morning).  The cost is $69.00 per person.  With the troop subsidy, it will end up being $44 per scout (and $69 per adult or non-scout).

Everyone is welcome, siblings must be accompanied by a parent. We are also going try and work in a visit to the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut on the way back.  This is the home of the historic ship “Nautilus”, the world’s first nuclear Submarine.  The cost of this would be separate and in addition to the cost of Battleship Cove.  If you want to go… please sign up quickly!  Signup for the trip will close on March 8th. After this time you can still come, assuming there is space, but you will need to purchase the tickets on your own.

Back by popular demand, Troop 49 will be running an awesome ski trip to OKEMO Mountain Resort in the ski capital of the Northeast, Vermont!! (less than 4 hours from Oakland).

Due to its popularity and abundance of amenities for the scouts, we will be staying in the same awesome house as we did last year. Here is the link to the house rental: https://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p331264?

As you’ll see in the rental photos, there is definitely plenty to do at the house after a full day of skiing and snowboarding. Life doesn’t get any better!  I could call your attention to the HOT TUB!!!!

Jockey Hollow Camping and Hiking Trip December 7-9

Trip Registration: http://www.troop49oakland.org/survey/index.php/452164?lang=en

Payment Page: Jockey Hollow 2018 Payment Page

Scouts, join Troop 49 for a great weekend of camping and hiking in the footsteps of General George Washington and his army at Jockey Hollow, in the Morristown National Historical Park in Morristown NJ. This was the main location that Washington and his army spent the winters during the American Revolution against the British. We will tour the Ford Mansion where Washington resided during those winters and we will visit his military headquarters. Then we will take a hike and see where his continental army survived the coldest winter in New Jersey history. So, come join us for a great weekend at Jockey Hollow and Camp Winnebago. Scouts will also have the opportunity to earn the Jockey Hollow Trail Medal. This medal was created back in 1962 and is awarded for completing the hike, answering some questions while hiking and submitting a short essay about George Washington and Jockey Hollow.

The plan is to leave OLPH around 5:15 – 5:30 on Friday Dec. 7th. (Camp check-in is 6:00 PM 20 miles away 287S to 23N to 513S).  Sunday return is tentatively between 10 and 11 am back at OLPH.
