When: Leaving day after Thanksgiving from OLPH at 9am.  Returning Saturday at 2pm.

Horse lovers, here is your opportunity to earn the Horsemanship Merit Badge and have an opportunity for trail riding.  The plan is to arrive at the Ranch by 10:30 and start the program at 11.  The merit badge program will go into the afternoon.  Afterwards we will head off to Happy Days Campground for dinner and tenting.   In the morning we will pack up the campsite and head back to the ranch for an hour trail ride.   Info on the ranch is available here: http://www.rollingstoneranch.com/boy-scouts–girl-scouts

 

Pricing:

The Troop Committee has agreed to a subsidy for scouts on this trip.

• Scouts: Merit badge, tenting, and trail ride $110.
• Scouts: Merit Badge only, not staying over $55.
• Adults: tenting only $25, riding $55

Note: Scouts must attend the Merit Badge Session in order to ride on Saturday.

 

Meals:

Please bring bag lunch for Friday. We will need cooks for dinner Friday night, breakfast on Saturday and a cold lunch on Saturday.

 

Clothing:

Dress in layers suitable for the weather.  We will be outside for the duration of the event.  Obviously, we will be in places where horses spend their days.  It will be MUDDY.  Sturdy shoes are absolutely required for your comfort.  Sneakers would be a poor choice for footwear.  For camping, a complete change of dry clothing in which to sleep.

Requirements:

The following are the merit badge requirements:

1. Do the following:
   1. Describe the safety precautions you should take when handling and caring for a horse.
   2. Describe the fire safety precautions you should take in a barn and around horses.
2. Name the 15 main parts of a horse.
3. Name four breeds of horses. Explain the special features for which each breed is known.
4. Describe the symptoms of colic. Name and describe four other horse health problems.
5. Explain what conformation is and why it is important. Explain the difference between lameness and unsoundness.
6. Explain the importance of hoof care and why a horse might need to wear shoes.
7. Demonstrate how to groom a horse, including picking hooves and caring for a horse after a ride.
8. Explain how to determine what and how much to feed a horse and why the amount and kind of feed are changed according to the activity level and the breed of horse.
9. Do the following:
   1. Name 10 parts of the saddle and bridle that you will use and explain how to care for this equipment.
   2. Show how to properly saddle and bridle a horse.
   3. Demonstrate how to safely mount and dismount a horse.
10. Explain and demonstrate how to approach and lead a horse safely from a stall, corral, or field and how to tie the horse securely.
11. On level ground, continuously do the following movements after safely mounting the horse. Do them correctly, at ease, and in harmony with the horse:
    1. Walk the horse in a straight line for 60 feet.
    2. Walk the horse in a half circle of not more than 16 feet in radius.
    3. Trot or jog the horse in a straight line for 60 feet.
    4. Trot or jog the horse in a half circle of not more than 30 feet in radius.
    5. Halt straight.
    6. Back up straight four paces.
    7. Halt and dismount.

Scouts and Parents,

Troop 49 has an opportunity for 8 scouts and 2 adults to visit Camp Sikorsky, held at the Sikorsky Aircraft factory in Stratford, Connecticut September 21-23, 2018.  The event is run as a STEM-related merit badge fair on Saturday, with a rare opportunity to tour the amazing Sikorsky helicopter factory on Sunday morning. You will get some close-up time with helicopters and the engineers that design and develop them.  In years past, there has been a featured speaker on Friday evening as well.  Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.  This is a highly-regarded trip and the tour is exceptional. Scouts will visit areas of Sikorsky’s operations which most visitors (including employee family & guests) are unable to see.

To participate, you must:

• Be a First Class scout
• Be age 14 by September 21, 2017
• Be a U.S. Citizen or Provide your Green Card Number.
• Be available from Friday 9/21 afternoon departure (~3:00-3:30 PM) to Sunday afternoon (~1:30-2 pm) return.

The trip is to Connecticut, and there is no opportunity to arrive late, leave early, or somehow join in-progress.  As we have to provide names and personal ID information well in advance due to U.S. Government security restrictions, there is no opportunity to substitute scouts once we register.   Therefore, if you register, it is considered by the Troop as a commitment, as you will be taking a spot that another scout cannot use.   Please consider carefully if you will have conflicts with academic events, athletics events, band, personal commitments, scouting events or anything else which will overlap.  If so, please leave the slot for another scout.

Merit badges offered include those listed below.  You will sign up for three in rank order, and you will be notified in August which of the three you will be working on, as well as what prerequisites must be complete prior to arriving at Sikorsky Aircraft:

*No Blue Card will be issued for First Aid.  The session is for review purposes only.

Trip cost is $60, which includes: Merit Badge instruction, meals (Friday snack, all meals on Saturday, and Sunday breakfast), and a Camp Sikorsky patch.

Memorabilia Shirts and Hats are available if ordered ahead of time.

You must register for this trip by Sunday night, July 15. Troop 49 will then submit our reservation to Camp Sikorsky regardless of whether the trip is full. If the eight slots fill prior to July 15, we will notify the Troop that the trip is full and submit at that time.
