Welcome to Boy Scout Troop 49's website.  Our troop has been chartered by Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, through the Boy Scouts of America since 1963. For nearly fifty years, we've been making the difference in the lives of the youth of Oakland and nearby communities.

February trip - Kittatinny Cabin Camping

Cabin camping at Kittatinny each February has long been a troop favorite.  This year will include an engineering project of building a trebuchet as well as the favorite events and activites the camp has to offer.

March trip - Camp Kluge (Turell)

Within the last 5 years, two cabins were built at Camp Kluge, which is located within Camp Turrell.  The troop will be camping in this cabin which is very well kept.  New scouts will get to visit Camp Turrell before summer camp and see where everything is prior to arriving back in July for a week.

May trip - COPE at Camp Lewis

COPE is a Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience. Boy Scouts and leaders of all ages can participate on the low ropes course, but they must be thirteen or older to do the high ropes course. The goal of COPE is to teach Teamwork, Communication, Leadership, Planning, Problem Solving, Decision Making, Self Esteem, and Trust.

Glen Gray Merit Badge Fair - Camp Glen Gray

This will occur the same weekend as COPE, and younger scouts may prefer to attend the merit badge fair so they can get a jump on advancement.  Besides Merit Badges, scouts can work on advancement requirements for Tenderfoot through First Class.

Summer Camp - Camp Turrell

Camp Turrell is a week-long summer camp experience for all scouts.  During the week at camp, scouts participate in activity areas including waterfront, nature, handicraft, outdoor skills, extreme sports, rifle, shotgun, archery, and tech lab.  Scouts will earn merit badges while attending the camp programs, and learn to live in the outdoors.

Summer Camp - Floodwood Mountain Reservation

Floodwood is a high adventure camp focused on backcountry canoe treks of up to 11 scouts and leaders.  For those planning to attend, please sign up (with deposit) by 1/19/2012.  This will allow the troop to reserve the correct number of treks needed.  There will be a meeting to identify treks on 1/26/2012 at 7:30 PM at OLPH.

 

Thinking of joining Troop 49?

Many boys bridge from the Webelos Cub Scout program to a scout troop, although you don't have to have the Cub Scout experience to become a boy scout.  Scouting is open to boys who have earned the Arrow of Light Award in Cub Scouts and are at least 10 years old, or have completed the fifth grade and are at least 10, or who are 11, but not yet 18 years old.

Each winter, we host an open house for Cub Scouts looking for a troop to join.  The following links are geared for parents and scouts to learn about the program and answer many of the questions you may have:
