Eagle Class of 2021

Zachary Pacenza

Beneficiary: The Hermitage Center, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ

My project consisted of beautifying the back patio of the recreational building at the Hermitage in Ho-Ho-Kus by power washing the patio and mulching the area around it. It also consisted of cutting, sanding and staining wood that would be assembled into 6 benches that would be placed around the Hermitage building itself and 7 flower boxes that would be laid in the patio area. It was to benefit this historic location in making the back patio in which parties and fairs take place look nice and allow visitors to enjoy and relax on the property while sitting on the benches.

Eagle Class of 2020

Daniel Tekerian

Beneficiary: Ringwood State Park, Ringwood, NJ

My Eagle Project consisted of planning, prepping, building, and installing a Trailhead Bike Repair Kiosk three and a half miles into the woods of Ringwood State Park. The kiosk featured a roof covering both sides of the structure, trail maps to guide hikers and bikers alike, and a Park Tool Trailhead WorkStation which was generously donated from the Tenafly Bicycle Workshop. I began my first work day of my project in the beginning of August 2020 and finished my project in the beginning of September 2020. However I first began the project about a year before when I got it approved and dug the first post holes at my site. The project went through countless redesigns and had many changes by the final blueprint, but it turned out to be exactly right. I learned so many useful skills in project design, carpentry, and leadership through my Eagle Project and being able to complete it by my own deadline (which was the start of my Senior year of high school) was a great accomplishment.

Matthew Hyland

Beneficiary: Manito Elementary School, Oakland, NJ

His project was to landscape and replace a birdhouse in Kathleen’s Garden in front of the Manito Elementary School in Oakland, NJ. It’s impact is much greater to Kathleen’s family than anyone else. Kathleen Pinckney was a student at Manito a few years ago. She passed away from cancer and is remembered by many. Her family made the memorial for her which they visit annually. Rebuilding this beautiful memorial will hopefully allow more people to recognize it.

William Angus

Beneficiary: Ramapo Reservation, Oakland, NJ

My Eagle project consisted of the total replacement of a bridge within Ramapo Reservation. Spanning 24 feet and sitting on three rock-filled gabions this new bridge provided increased trail capacity and a safer passage over the water.

Michael Hyland

Beneficiary: Bergen County Horse Rescue, Mahwah, NJ

His service project was to enclose approximately an acre of property at the Bergen County Horse Rescue in Mahwah, NJ. The project included clearing the area of debris and dead trees, installing 81 fence posts, mounting hardware and attaching the fencing material, and installing a metal gate. This pasture is now functional for horses to graze and allows BCHR to rescue additional horses.

Eagle Class of 2019

Johnathan Wong

Beneficiary: Oakland Library, Oakland, NJ

I lead scouts and volunteers in a three phase landscaping project of a two-level flowerbed (32’10″x6′) in the overlook area.

  1. We manually cleared the rampant weeds and wildflowers in the two flowerbeds.
  2. We designed a functional plan for planting perennials and deer resistant plants that required low maintenance. Watering cans were used as a water source to water the plants
  3. We set up two bird house kits and painted them for each flower bed level. As a result of the landscaping project, benefits included a substantial addition to the overall landscape, providing a low cost and functional garden for the community, and contributing a maintenance plan that aided the plants to grow in ideal conditions.

Charles Ming

Beneficiary: Great Oak Park, Oakland, NJ

For my project, I created a small trail called Nuckel Pass at Great Oak Park. Most of the work involved clearing vegetation, removing invasive plant species, and refurbishing an old concrete table to be used in a rest area. The trail borders a stream and offers a scenic walk for park-goers.

Eric Ming

Beneficiary: Lorrimer Sanctuary, Franklin Lakes, NJ

My project included tearing down a small shed. Move the materials into a dumpster. Clean the area. Using the space that used to be the shed, build a small amphitheater with three benches in a semi-circle shape.

Matthew Fishman

Beneficiary: Temple Beth Rishon, Wyckoff, NJ

For his Eagle Scout Project, Matthew Fishman laid a flagstone path from the back patio down to the pond behind Temple Beth Rishon in Wyckoff, NJ. He wanted make it easier for people to walk down to the lake for religious and festive purposes, such as the Tashlich ceremony and weddings, without worrying about mud or unstable ground. The path also opened up to a larger area to allow for gathering and photographs by the lake.
