Kings Point Eagle Scout Association

22nd Annual Camporee

US Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point New York

Scoutmaster in Charge: Mr. Peter Mazzilli, USMMA Graduate

USMMA PhotoCome join us for a Camporee at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY.  Kings Point is one of the five federal service academies that train and educate officers for all branches of the military.  This unique institution must also prepare maritime officers who carry out the sealift operations that enable our armed forces to be effective around the world.  The campus is situated on the north shore of Long Island and we will be camping on the waterfront April 29-May 1.  More details to follow.

We don’t have a description of the activities for the Camporee yet.  It will be small – less than 350 people, and there is a lot to see there. Invest the time; we’re sure it will be worthwhile.

Each participant in the Camporee will receive a patch commemorating the recently lost merchant vessel, the El Faro.  The Eagle Scout Association encourages scouts to bring small bills as they will be selling off merchandise from previous camporees at blow-out prices!  A great way to add to your scouting patch collection.

Registration for this trip closes April 22.  We have to mail the roster in advance of our visit, so this will be a hard cut-off.

We will depart early Saturday morning, likely 7:00 AM for an 8:30 AM arrival.  We will spend Saturday at the Merchant Marine Academy.  The precise plan will be supplied by the Midshipman.  We will depart for home Sunday after breakfast.  The fee for the campout is $25.00.

We’re going camping, hiking and attending a Demolition Derby April 22 to April 24, 2016!

We will be camping OUTSIDE Friday and Saturday nights at Mrs. Pappas’ father’s 11 acre property in Shartlesville, PA  ( GPS use 3400 Mountain Road, Hamburg PA,19526) located at the base of the Blue Mountains.  The weather could be cold, warm, or rainy so pack accordingly.  On Saturday, we will hike the Appalachian Trail to Pulpit Rock and the Pinnacle, and in the evening attend a Demolition Derby.  Need tent nights?  Need to cook for advancement?  We’ve got you covered!  Sign up and let’s get going!

The Appalachian Trail is nearly a 2,200 mile hiking trail through the Appalachian Mountain Range that goes through 14 different states.  It is the longest “hiking-only” footpath in the world.  Also among the longest continuously marked trails with 2×6 white blazes.  It is the largest and longest running volunteer conservation project in the world, consisting of 31 distinct maintenance clubs.  Pack a day pack, sturdy boots or shoes, 2 water bottles, sunscreen, hat, and binoculars (it is the beginning of Hawk migration).

Like to see cars drive into one another, pile up, stall, steam, and get smashed?  Like action then this is the trip to go on!  Get ready for the action at Mountain Springs Arena Demolition Derby at 7 pm.  This is a rain or shine event.  Covered seating is available.

We’ll meet at OLPH at 4:15 pm for roll call and depart for Shartlesville, PA on Friday April 22 at 4:30 PM.  We hope to beat some of the rush hour traffic.  The drive is approximately 125 miles, 2 hours without traffic.  Cooking dinner in foil was a success on the last trip, so please pack your foil wrapped dinner (please label with your name) for Friday night.   We will set up camp, make dinner, and settle in for a campfire.  On Saturday, we’ll awaken, eat a hot breakfast, build our lunches, and head for the Appalachian Trail by car – about a 20 minute ride.  The hike to the Pinnacle and back is roughly 4 to 5 hours, depending on our pace.  Be prepared, if weather is inclement, we will go to Crystal Cave in Kutztown, so bring $10 for admission.  We’ll eat another great meal, and head to the arena for the Demo Derby.   Food and concession stands are in the Arena.  If you wish to purchase something, please bring money.  We’ll head home Sunday morning after breakfast.

Backpacks and Class A are not necessary, but Class B or C are required to wear to derby.  What are you waiting for?  Pack your gear and let’s GO!

Trip cost $40, covers trip expenses and admission to Demo Derby

Registration closes Friday evening, April 15th
