How: Meet Mrs Angus at OLPH Friday Dec13 at 5pm and carpool down to the Corporate Hangar.

Please see attached directions: Approximately 35 min. Drive.

Timeline: Friday
• We will assemble at OLPH at 5pm. We need to be at Hanger by 5:45 to meet Mr. Fern
for Roll call. Afterwards we will break into groups and carpool down to Airport
operations at 6pm. View the various maintenance and fire equipment. Return back to
Corporate Hangar around 730-8 pm and prep for dinner.
• After Dinner/ clean up. Start working on the Merit badge.
• Foam glider distance competition (if time permits) or Saturday morning after breakfast
• Anything else we would like to do. Work on canoe’s and Clean trailers

Saturday
• Visit with aircraft fire and rescue along with operations dept 10am. Tower visit possibly.
• Breakfast/clean up work on Canoes/trailer.
• Discuss anything we missed on Friday carpool back to Oakland between 3-5pm

Mr. Fern will be speaking about the exciting field of Aviation and all the sciences that
encompass it, giving scouts an opportunity to earn the Aviation Merit Badge. We will review the
Merit Badge workbook and have a discussion along with an informative Power point
presentation to help the scout with their requirements. Please bring this worksheet with you to
the hangar. This is a private facility which is completely secure. The property has a field for
which those that would like to camp outside in tents for advancement requirements can do so
weather permitting OR you may sleep inside on the warm hangar floor. This is a great
opportunity for those looking to achieve the cooking requirement for advancement. It will be
Dinner on Friday and breakfast/lunch on Saturday. Please RSVP by Sunday Dec.6 so that we
have an accurate headcount for breaking down into patrols and giving those that will be cooking
a week to prepare. Please keep in mind that this is a place of business, so scout, please act
responsibly. No running as there is numerous pointy objects on these aircraft. Mr. Fern will give
a safety briefing prior to entering the hangar.

Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, mess kit. Otherwise, you may sleep in the warm hangar with
the aircraft.

When: 11am Saturday, November 16th to Sunday November 17th . Meeting at Glen Grey parking lot.

Where: Ramapo Mountains, NJ

Who: Scouts / Parents

Weather: It’s November.  Plan for cold weather with possibility of rain or snow!

Details:

Troop 49 is doing a Backpacking Trip! We will be hiking from Oakland to Mahwah.  This Backpacking trip is going to help scouts with physical fitness, mental awareness, leadership and outdoor skills.  It will be an opportunity for a life changing experience!

We are planning on hiking approximately 6 miles from Camp Glen Grey to Camp Yaw Paw.  We have a cabin reserved to handle 20 people for those that wish or set up a tent and sleep outdoors. Should the weather cooperate, and enough people want we could hike back to Camp Glen Grey on Sunday.

The route has been designed to offer a backpacking experience for new as well as seasoned backpackers.

Great opportunity for scouts to complete …

  • 5 mile hike requirement
  • Orienteering to help rank up.
  • Conservation requirement. If scouts pick up trash.
  • Backpacking meal requirement for cooking merit badge.What to Bring:  Keep it light! EVERYTHING HAS TO FIT IN THE BACKPACK Please refer to the packing list that was handed in the last meeting.
  • Gear: Positive Attitude, Adaptability
  • Camp Sites:  We have a cabin for Saturday night at Camp Yaw Paw and can set up tents for those that need the outdoor camping requirement

    • Tent – We have a cabin and will likely not need to use tents. If you need one, borrow one.
    • Backpack with padded hip belt
    • Dry Bag for critical items – 1 change of clothes and sleeping bag
  • Sleeping
    • Sleeping bag, mummy style (In stuff sack lined with plastic bag)
    • Sleeping pad (Closed Cell or Therm-a-Rest)
    • Sleep Clothes – preferably, only worn only in sleeping bag
    • Light or Inflatable Pillow
    • Hand warmers – at least 4 per night!
  • Clothing
    • Hiking Boots (Well Broken In)
    • Heavy Socks – 2 Pairs
    • Light Inner Socks
    • Sweater/ Fleece/ Down Jacket (Not something too heavy)
    • Long Pants

    • Headlamp – fresh batteries

  • We will be eating trail food … the same food backpackers eat on the trail at Philmont. Picky eaters should fill pockets with snacks …
  •  “Shake Down” Meeting before the trip:   Please pack your backpack and bring it fully loaded to the Troop Meeting on November 7, 2019.  At this meeting each scout will be weighed to determine the maximum pack weight.  Also each scout will choose a food buddy and divide up the food needed to be carried between each other.
